Additional Details

New Bern was a Union hub where so-called "contrabands" were known to cross the seeking refuge. Some areas like New Bern became overrun. For this reason the Freedmen's Bureau was set up. Here we see an extended black family, one of whom seems to have a large bag in front of her.
